    28TH FEBRUARY - 1ST MARCH 2018

    EAST AFRICA TRADE
    DEVELOPMENT FORUM (TDF)

ABOUT TRADE DEVELOPMENT FORUM

Trade facilitation has made a big difference to competitiveness in the East African region. Between 2010 and 2017, significant efficiency gains have been achieved at the ports and borders, and by revenue authorities as well as agencies and firms involved in trade logistics.

TMEA, her partners and others have played an important role in these achievements. Valuable lessons have been learnt. The objective of the East African Trade Development Forum is to showcase the exciting results we have achieved with our partners during our Strategy One (2010-2017), share lessons learnt, and discuss Strategy 2 (2018-2024).

The Forum format will be high-level, interactive and participative. We will combine a mix of experiential, plenary and breakout sessions spread over the two days. The experiential sessions will include a ‘Wall of Trade’ depicting EAC trade Corridors, real-time cargo tracking; and women-in-trade live exhibits. Break-out session topics will cover areas of trade facilitation such as information and communication technology for trade; trade logistics; trade infrastructure, logistics and transport corridors; industrialisation and jobs through cluster development; women in cross-border trade, and new ways of funding trade development.

The Forum will aim to establish vibrant permanent platforms for sharing knowledge and experience amongst partners over the next six years.

Partners and participants will be drawn from both our regional and international trade development communities. We are honoured to have His Excellency, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda as our Chief Guest. Key speakers will include Ali Mufuruki our Board Chair, Development Ministers and distinguished speakers from trade facilitation and Aid for Trade fields.

Entebbe International Airport is the principal international airport of Uganda. It is near the town of Entebbe, on the shores of Lake Victoria, and approximately 40.5 kilometres (25 mi) by road south-west of the central business district of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. The best way to get around Kampala city and the neighbouring towns is by using minibus-type taxis called matatus. This is the most efficient and cost-effective method of transportation in urban areas.

Pioneer Bus is a very nice option to take around town. You can identify these buses by their orange and black colors and large size.

Several bus companies offer direct lines between Kampala and neighbouring countries have stations in the city. A night bus from Kampala could start at 16:00hrs to arrive at 06:00hrs in Nairobi.

Probably the safest and fastest way for a group of 4 to 5 people to travel in Kampala is by Special Hire Taxi. In general, white or yellow Toyota Corolla’s seem to be the taxi of choice and can be identified by the “taxi” sign on top of the car or by the man yelling out his window at you. There are many taxi stages around town including Garden City, the National Theatre, and Pioneer Mall. The price is dependent on where you are going and how far it is.

CAR

The roads in Kampala are good. When planning to move around Kampala it is best not to ask how far it is but to ask how long it will take. Local drivers normally have a good idea of how long journeys will take. There saloon vehicle hire companies in the city. This will cost upwards of US$50.00 per day (not including fuel).

Perhaps the most adventurous thing you can do in Uganda is ride on a boda boda. These are commercial motorbikes. While they may be quite risky to use, they are the fastest and can get you to your destination in a split of seconds. They have mastered the art of manoeuvring their way through heavy traffic thus a favourite for many. Always be cautious while using a boda boda, you can tell the rider to go slow or fast if you so desire and be careful not to miss carrying your helmet.

You will definitely wish to try them.

Visitors to Uganda must obtain a visa on arrival to Uganda or from one of the Ugandan diplomatic missions, unless they come from one of the visa exempt countries. All visitors must hold a passport valid for 6 months. A list of Uganda missions abroad is available at http://www.mofa.go.ug/#

You can also apply online for an ‘e-visa’ at http://visas.immigration.go.ug/ . You should give yourself sufficient time to apply for a visa and make sure when applying that the start date and validity covers the period you wish to travel. You can also apply for an East African Tourist Visa. This is valid for 90 days and allows multiple entry into Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. You can apply for this visa on the ‘e-visa’ website.

Passport validity

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Uganda.

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel.

Vaccines Required

Hepatitis A: CDC recommends this vaccine because you can get hepatitis A through contaminated food or water in Uganda, regardless of where you are eating or staying.

Malaria: You will need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria. Your doctor can help you decide which medicine is right for you, and also talk to you about other steps you can take to prevent malaria. See more detailed information about malaria in Uganda.

Typhoid: You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in Uganda. CDC recommends this vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater.
